Size a patio around how you use it
Start with the activity that does not fit comfortably today. You might need room for chairs to pull away from a table, a separate seating area, or a path that does not cut through the middle of a gathering.
A rough sketch can make that choice easier:
- Show the door used to reach the patio.
- Mark furniture you intend to keep.
- Draw the routes between the house, yard and any adjoining path.
- Identify existing concrete that should remain, come out or be extended.
You can request a quote before making this sketch. Its purpose is to help explain the space, not to make you design the work. For a starting point, use the measurement guide.

Patio drainage and door thresholds
The patio’s height needs to be considered alongside doors, nearby paving and the intended route for water. Copying an existing slab’s height is not automatically the right answer for a larger footprint.
The NRMCA finishing guide includes drainage and prepared support among the decisions made before placement. Tell the provider about pooling you have seen and show where the new surface will meet the home. The final levels need an on-site assessment; a photograph alone does not settle them.
Broom, stamped or exposed-aggregate patio
These finishes give you different things to compare. A broom finish offers a straightforward textured surface. Stamped concrete uses patterned tools or texture skins. Exposed aggregate reveals the stone within the surface rather than imprinting a pattern.
| Choice | Useful selection question |
|---|---|
| Broom finish | Does the proposed texture suit everyday outdoor use? |
| Stamped concrete | Which pattern, base color and accent effect do you prefer? |
| Exposed aggregate | Do you like the proposed stone and surface texture? |
Review the proposed sealer as part of a decorative finish. Brickform’s finish systems show that sheen and color enhancement can change with the system. Ask about wet-use suitability as well as appearance; no finish should be described as slip-proof. Compare the options in our finish guide.
Patio cost and scope
A patio quote should identify the usable footprint, preparation, any old-concrete removal, finish and access arrangements. Decorative borders or a changed layout should be visible in the scope rather than assumed from a photograph.
For context, Tex-Tex Concrete publishes different DFW bands for residential flatwork and decorative work. The patio cost guide preserves those dated provider examples and their limitations. They are not a quote for your property or a reason to select a slab design by price alone.

Pool edges, covers and future additions
Mention a planned cover, spa or nearby pool at the outset. These can introduce separate requirements beyond an ordinary patio surface. A concrete patio enquiry does not automatically include structural supports, pool work or electrical installation.
If the project is a spa base, the hot-tub pad page explains why the selected model matters. Otherwise, tell us what you want the patio to make possible. Burleson Concrete Quotes is an independent referral website; a provider may contact you to discuss your project.
